A Collage of Collectibles

An eclectic jumble of vintage finds — gigantic metal skeleton keys, a phrenological bust, a jaunty clock that resembles an overgrown pocket watch — decorates Kolene Spicher's home studio.

Distinct Kitchen Accents

Windsor stools by Bryce Ritter and a John Robshaw rug surprise in the kitchen.

Bright idea! Boat hardware takes a supporting role as kitchen cabinet latches.

Personalized Laundry Room

Kolene designed the laundry room's clothespin-print wallpaper for York, and painted the matching ironing-themed art.

Beautiful Breakfast Nook

A glossy black table mixes it up in the breakfast nook with weathered benches by Kevin Ritter and a sweet-as-pie gingham wing chair. Kolene painted the nautical-themed works above the mantel.

Bright idea! Why stop at the mantel? Turn other fireplace "ledges" into display opportunities, too.

Lively Guest Room

Lively Guest Room

In the guest room, Kolene's massively scaled flower paintings reinvigorate one of the most predictable art subjects around. A collection of seashell boxes sits atop a couple of antique chests, and the quilts adorning the custom birch-frame bed once belonged to Kolene's mother. The graphic-but-girly rug is by Madeline Weinrib; the armchair, from Pennsylvania House. "I like to buy in categories," says Kolene. "One rolling pin doesn't grab me at all, but 10 rolling pins start to get interesting."

Mark built the bookcases and table for his wife's studio, while Kolene painted the floral design on the rug by hand.

Bright idea! Personalize a rug with your own design, or a pretty stencil, using acrylic paint.

Keeping It Local

Kolene and Mark commissioned a friend to create this portrait of an Amish woman, in honor of their home's proximity to Pennsylvania Amish country.

An extra-large Hoesch bathtub pops against walls painted in Behr's Sled, as does a mermaid painting by Kolene.

A Passion for Life

A Passion for Life

Kolene Spicher and her husband, Mark, own Spicher & Co., a firm that produces art for catalogs like Pottery Barn and Ballard Designs. Her home studio looks onto a dreamy vista of the Susquehanna River Valley, and all morning she paints there, at a curly maple table Mark fashioned (in fact, he built the entire house). Since Kolene's lived with ovarian cancer much of her adult life, her illness has amplified a desire to surround herself with beauty, in her work and in her home.
